American speaker manufacturer Polk Audio announced
today a new line of premium after-market car speakers designed in collaboration
with MOMO. MOMO, made famous by its association with Ferrari and the world’s
top racing teams, is an Italian manufacturer of high quality, high performance,
high style after-market car accessories such as alloy wheels, seats, steering
wheels and race wear.
The product line consists of two 2-way component
systems, a tweeter and two subwoofers. Polk Audio engineered the
acoustics and MOMO Design created the striking cosmetics of this exciting
new line.
“We wanted to develop the ultimate speakers for
car enthusiasts who have an equal passion for high performance automobiles
and high performance audio.” said Polk 12v VP, Rob Limbaugh. “Polk Audio
has unsurpassed speaker expertise and technology but we needed a design
partner that possessed superior cosmetic skills. The choice was clear.
When it comes to products for the car, MOMO is the absolute best. Their
decades long experience with racing, metal casting and cutting edge styling
made MOMO the obvious choice. Whenever I mention MOMO to car enthusiasts,
their eyes light up.”
The line includes two 2-way component systems,
a 5 ¼ inch mid/driver with one inch tweeter and an external crossover
network (MM455), and a similar system based on a 6 ½ inch mid/driver
(MM465). Both systems feature cast aluminum mid/driver grilles that, due
to their large open area, offer improved performance as well as stunning
cosmetics. The MM400 one inch tweeter from the component systems will be
available as a separate item. Ten inch and twelve inch subwoofers
round out the line.
The cosmetics of the MOMO/Polk autosound speakers
have been designed by MOMO Design to improve the car’s interior looks in
the same way that MOMO after-market wheels, pedals and gearshift knobs
add to the style and performance of a car.
But these products offer much more than great
styling. The full force of Polk Audio’s award-winning engineering went
into developing high performance to match the striking cosmetics. All of
the components in the MOMO Series benefit from Polk’s Dynamic Balance technology
that stems from a joint research project between Johns Hopkins University's
Center for Non Destructive Evaluation and Polk Audio. Using advanced laser
imaging techniques, Polk engineers were able to observe and vastly reduce
speaker cone resonance which is the root cause of frequency response error
and distortion.
The mid/drivers in the component systems feature
cast aluminum baskets and grilles, binding post input terminals, and ultra
stiff polymer composite cones. They feature woven carbon-fiber dustcaps
and oversize voice coils (1 ½” in the MM465) for high power handling
and outstanding bass response.
The MM400 1 inch tweeter dome is a polymer/metal
composite to minimize resonance for flat response, great inner detail and
low distortion. Finding an ideal mounting location for the MOMO tweeter
is a snap, thanks to its small but powerful Neodymium magnet and supplied
flush and surface mount housings. The tweeter pivots in either housing
to provide proper sound staging regardless of tweeter position.
